My bro bought a truck that was hit or miss on starting, it's funny bcs he had to catch it at the exact moment it fired, or it was dead in the water.

The Nissan dealer quoted an arm and a leg ($3825) for a timing chain replacement, but after some trial and error with cam sensors, a used Altima sensor did the trick for almost two years.

When it failed, a new Nissan sensor wouldn't work if the bolt was too tight.

So, he has been driving around with a loose bolt for three months, but now a scary rattling sound is developing.

I think the dealer's quote was out to lunch compared to their quick online search showing a $400-$1100 average cost.

What do you think guys, is the dealer price way off?

Yeah no! 3825 dollars is WAY ABOVE AVERAGE. It should just be within 400 to 1100 dollars like you found in your research. That's probably all OEM parts and maybe if you wanna save some money you could switch out some parts with aftermarket. Stop driving it altogether and get a second opinion from an independent mechanic. That's the best way to go about it.
